Anglo American sold 34.1 million mt of export thermal coal during 2016, down 8% on the year, according to its Q4 production report released Thursday.

Export thermal coal production for the year fell 4% from 2015 to 32.5 million mt after the sale of the Callide mine in Australia in October 2016, the company said.

The drop in output was despite October-December export thermal coal production rising 4% on the year to 7.9 million mt, with sales up 3% on the year for the quarter at 9.3 million mt. Anglo attributed the Q4 increases to productivity driven improvements across its operations in South Africa and at Colombia’s Cerrejon.

Anglo’s annual South African export coal sales for 2016 were 4% lower on the year at 19.1 million mt, although the average selling price rose 9% to $60/mt FOB.
